About the Magazine
Buckhead Living Magazine is the only community and lifestyle magazine created exclusively for Buckhead and its visitors. The Buckhead community, located just north of Atlanta is referred to as one of the “top affluent communities in the country ” by the Robb Report, and described by Fortune Magazine as “the top encampment of business executives in the southeast.” The seven zip codes that make up the unincorporated community of Buckhead is home to over 70,000 people and include the wealthiest zip code in the country, with the average annual income of $150,000 or higher. Often referred to as the “Beverly Hills of the East ” Buckhead is also a huge destination area in and of itself. Although it is larger than most Georgia cities Buckhead is actually not a city, has no official government, and is part of the city of Atlanta.
The strongest leadership of Buckhead comes from the Buckhead Coalition. Incorporated in 1988,membership in the coalition is by invitation only and limited to 100 chief executives of Buckhead ’s major firms and others that have a pronounced commitment to the community. Sam Massell, former mayor of Atlanta, and President of the Buckhead Coalition, has praised Buckhead Living Magazine as a continuous force for the branding of Buckhead and contributes in each issue with his insight of what is happening in Buckhead.
Buckhead History
The Buckhead area was originally settled by Creek and Cherokee Indians. They began selling off their land, and by the 1820 ’s most of it was sold. Henry Irby of South Carolina purchased over 200 acres in the middle of Buckhead, as it is now known, for only $650. He built a grocery store and a tavern, and built his house behind them for convenience. Irby’s tavern grew in popularity as land development grew in North Georgia. Legend has it that Irby shot a buck on his property and placed his trophy over the front door of the tavern. People traveling from North Georgia to Atlanta would stop in to quench their thirst, and tell their friends to meet them at the “buck’s head.” For a short time an area of Buckhead was also referred to as ‘Irbyville’ but soon the whole area took on the name visitors made popular, Buckhead, where Peachtree Road, East Paces Ferry Road, West Paces Ferry Road and Roswell Roads all come together, and is known as Buckhead Park today.
